Reducing your calorie intake could boost your memory abilities, according to a new German study.
The researchers divided adults with an average age of 60 into three groups: the first followed a calorie-restricted diet, reducing food intake by about 30 per cent; the second had a similar diet but with a higher proportion of unsaturated fats; the third made no diet changes.
All participants underwent memory tests at the start and end of the study.
The calorie restricted group had the best results, increasing their memory scores by about 20 per cent.
It’s thought that cutting calories may reduce inflammation in the body or the amount of harmful molecules (free radicals) that we naturally produce. (Inflammation and free radicals damage cells.)
These changes would help explain the improvement in memory, by keeping brain cells in better health.
